Ancient landmarks closed off to walkers, campaigners say

Campaigners from the Right to Roam group reveal that over 5,500 ancient English landmarks, including hillforts and burial mounds, are inaccessible to the public due to being on private land without legal rights of access. While landowners are not obligated to open these sites, some do give permission on a case-by-case basis, as highlighted by the Stone Club and government advisors Historic England. Calls for a change in the law to allow responsible access to these sites, similar to Scotland’s laws, are being made to preserve and celebrate England’s rich history.
