In the Kimana reserve in Kenya, the Maasai Olympics saw 160 athletes, including 40 women, compete in traditional games reimagined to promote sporting prowess and gender equality, replacing the traditional lion killing and exclusion of girls. The event, created in 2012 to preserve lions and empower women, featured races ranging from 100 to 5,000 meters and plans to expand female participation. The games have helped increase the lion population and are changing attitudes towards women’s participation in the community.
