Israel strikes landmark residential tower in southern Rafah as truce talks stall
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Residents in Rafah, southern Gaza, reported that Israel targeted one of the largest residential towers on Saturday. This move by Israel increased pressure on the last remaining area of the enclave that has not been invaded. Over a million displaced Palestinians are currently seeking shelter in this area.

The 12-story building sustained damage in the strike, resulting in dozens of families becoming homeless. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Israel’s military claimed that Hamas was using the building to plan attacks against Israelis.

One resident of the tower mentioned that Israel provided a 30-minute warning to evacuate the building at night. The chaotic evacuation resulted in people leaving behind their belongings and money. This strike has caused concern among residents about a broader Israeli assault on Rafah.

The ongoing air and ground assault on Gaza has led to the death of nearly 31,000 Palestinians, with thousands more feared to be buried under rubble. The war, triggered by a Hamas attack on southern Israel, has resulted in a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

Efforts are being made to provide relief to Gaza, with a ship carrying supplies preparing to depart from Cyprus. The situation in Gaza is dire, with many buildings destroyed and the population displaced. The hope for a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza seems uncertain as negotiations have stalled.

As the Muslim holy month of Ramadan approaches, concerns are rising about escalating violence in the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Prisoner’s Association reported that over 7,500 Palestinians have been detained by Israel since October. Israel has intensified raids in response to Palestinian attacks.
