Gene-Kelly Antonio Wharekawa, 31, was sentenced to 22 months in jail after leading police on a 230km chase through State Highway 1, during which he drove recklessly, stole fuel, rammed patrol cars, and collided with another vehicle. Wharekawa, who was on bail at the time, live-streamed the chaotic journey on Facebook and refused to provide a blood specimen upon arrest. The judge highlighted his concerning criminal history and warned of the potential danger he posed to the public, suggesting that he address his drug-induced psychosis through residential rehabilitation before seeking home detention.
