Canada has informed the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal that it cannot provide a timeline for addressing a backlog of 140,000 cases related to First Nations child services, leading to concerns about a worsening crisis. The tribunal had ordered Canada to address the backlog under Jordan’s Principle by December 10, but Canada stated that the proposed timeline was not feasible and could impact service delivery. Urgent requests are taking up to a month to be reviewed, with delays also seen in reimbursing service providers, according to the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society.
