The investigation into the tumultuous firing of Sam Altman from OpenAI over three months ago concluded in a victory for the high-profile chief executive. He is now set to reassert control over the artificial intelligence company he co-founded.

OpenAI announced in a news conference that Mr. Altman, who returned to the company just five days after his ousting, did not engage in any behavior that warranted his removal. He will regain his seat on the board of directors, a role that had eluded him.

Mr. Altman’s abrupt departure from OpenAI had shocked Silicon Valley and cast doubts on the future of the influential tech start-up. His reinstatement raises questions about the company’s readiness to lead the tech industry’s focus on artificial intelligence.

After agreeing to an investigation of his conduct and the board’s actions, Mr. Altman did not immediately regain his board seat upon returning. Two members who had voted for his removal agreed to step down, and their replacements oversaw the investigation conducted by the law firm, WilmerHale.

Bret Taylor, chairman of OpenAI’s board, announced during the news conference that the report on the episode had been completed but was not released to the public. The law firm’s findings indicated that while the board acted within its discretion to terminate Mr. Altman, his conduct did not necessitate removal.

The board expressed full confidence in Mr. Altman and Mr. Brockman, the company president who resigned in protest after Mr. Altman’s removal. OpenAI also addressed concerns about board diversity by appointing three women as directors.

Mr. Taylor stated that the board will continue to expand, and with the report and new board members, OpenAI aims to move past the controversy surrounding Mr. Altman’s removal.

However, the company has faced criticism for not releasing the full report, leaving questions unanswered about the incident. Some insiders have raised concerns about Mr. Altman’s influence on the investigation process.

Mr. Taylor and Mr. Altman expressed relief that the investigation was over and emphasized the company’s resilience and commitment to its mission.

OpenAI provided a summary of the report, stating that the board’s decision to remove Mr. Altman was based on his lack of candor with the board, leading to a breakdown in trust. The company has implemented new governance guidelines and policies to improve its operations.
