President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of 1,500 individuals who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the pandemic, while also pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes, in the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. The commutations are for those who served home confinement sentences for at least a year, with the goal of reducing the spread of COVID-19 in prisons. Biden plans to take more steps in the coming weeks, following in the footsteps of Barack Obama’s second largest single-day act of clemency in 2017.
