Eight women 'developed cancer after smear test misread'

Eight women developed cancer after their smear tests were misread by screeners at the Southern Health Trust, while a further 11 women had pre-cancerous changes in their cells that required treatment. The trust apologised for the failures, which were discovered during a review triggered by Serious Adverse Incidents. The Royal College of Pathologists report highlighted persistent underperformance in some laboratory screeners, leading to suspensions and conditions of practice being imposed.
