Negotiators fail to reach an agreement on a plastic pollution treaty. Talks to resume next year

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul spoke at the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution in Busan, South Korea, where negotiators were unable to reach an agreement on a treaty to address global plastic pollution. The main points of contention were whether the treaty should reduce total plastic on Earth and include legally binding controls on toxic chemicals used in plastics. Over 100 countries want the treaty to limit production, cleanup, and recycling, but some plastic-producing and oil and gas countries oppose this. Negotiators plan to resume talks next year after failing to reach a consensus.
