In April 2022, then home secretary Priti Patel and Rwanda’s minister of foreign affairs Vincent Biruta signed an “economic development partnership” in Kigali. The scheme, aimed at sending asylum seekers to Rwanda to deter illegal crossings, cost the UK £715m without deporting a single individual, leading to criticism from Labour and the Liberal Democrats for being a wasteful and failed policy. The partnership was eventually ruled unlawful by the UK Supreme Court, highlighting the ineffectiveness and excessive spending of the initiative.
