Appeals court extends stay of judges order to build veterans housing

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has extended the stay of a judge’s order to build housing on the VA’s West Los Angeles campus, setting an expedited April hearing for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ appeal. U.S. District Judge David O. Carter’s goal to have 200 units of temporary housing opened by early next year was halted by the VA’s appeal, citing potential harm from diverting funds from veteran services. The appeal stems from a class-action lawsuit alleging the VA failed to provide housing for disabled and homeless veterans on the campus, leading to Carter’s order for 1,800 supportive housing units and 750 temporary units.
