Transport secretary Louise Haigh quits over phone offence

Transport secretary Louise Haigh has resigned after details of a past fraud conviction were revealed, stemming from a false report she made to police about a mugging a decade ago. Despite admitting to the mistake and receiving a conditional discharge in 2013, questions have been raised about Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s judgement in appointing her to the Cabinet. Haigh, who was the youngest female Cabinet member, stated that she did not want to be a distraction and Labour would be best served by her supporting from outside government, as she had made significant strides in taking the rail system back into public ownership.
