The Ashburton District Council plans to appeal Environment Canterbury’s representation review, despite being pleased with the final outcome, in order to stay involved in the process and have a say in any potential appeals from others. The appeal is specifically to support the use of the Mid Canterbury/Ōpākihi name for the continued constituency of Ashburton and Selwyn districts, clarifying their preference for the status quo and suggesting a comprehensive representation review before the 2028 local body elections. The final proposal will be reviewed by the Local Government Commission, which will consider all resolutions, submissions, appeals, and objections, potentially holding a hearing for those who have appealed or objected.
