Two people smugglers, Ali Khdir and Dilshad Shamo, were caught running a “Tripadvisor for people smugglers” operation, bringing around 100 migrants a week from the Middle East to Europe by offering bronze, silver, gold, and platinum packages based on risk. Most migrants were from Iran, Iraq, and Syria seeking a better life in Western Europe, with the smugglers using a hawala banking system to transfer profits. Despite hopes of dismantling the smuggling industry, the profitable and criminal activity is likely to continue with others taking over the operation.
