Former Brazilian president indicted over alleged coup plot

Former President Jair Bolsonaro is accused by Brazil’s federal police of attempting a coup in 2022 to stay in power after losing the election. The police have indicted 36 people, including Bolsonaro’s former defense minister and close aides, as part of a criminal conspiracy. The plan involved assassinating President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and declaring a “state of siege” to stay in power. The case will now be referred to Brazil’s Supreme Court for further action. If convicted, Bolsonaro could face years in prison.
