Heavy gunfire erupted in Juba, South Sudan at the home of former spy chief Gen. Akol Koor, who has been under house arrest for two months, leading to clashes between soldiers and security guards. Two people were injured during the hour-long exchange of fire in the high-end neighborhood of Thongpiny. The incident highlights ongoing political tensions in the country, which despite a 2018 peace agreement, remains fragile under the leadership of President Salva Kiir and former rival Riek Machar, with the country’s elections postponed for two years to focus on implementing the peace deal.
