The Madras High Court cleared the way for Carnatic singer T.M. Krishna to receive the prestigious ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ award, with a mirror award from The Hindu, despite objections from a relative of M.S. Subbulakshmi. While Krishna’s critical remarks about Subbulakshmi were noted, the court ruled that conferring the award was the prerogative of the Music Academy and The Hindu, but the cash prize should not bear Subbulakshmi’s name. The judge emphasized respecting the wishes of the departed soul and temporarily restrained the use of Subbulakshmi’s name in the award title pending further legal proceedings.
