Rights experts call for immediate end to post-election violence in Mozambique

Weeks of violent protests followed the disputed 9 October presidential elections in Mozambique, won by ruling party Frelimo’s Daniel Chapo amid fraud allegations. Security forces used violent measures against peaceful protesters, resulting in 30 deaths, 200 injuries, and 300 arrests, with military intervention to quell protests. Human rights experts condemned the violence, called for impartial investigations, and emphasized the need to uphold rights, ensure media freedom, and prevent further harm in the country’s democratic framework.
