Warning that UK is walking into an ‘accident crisis’ as deaths hit record high

Accidental deaths in the UK have reached a record high, with more than half occurring in the home, making accidents the top cause of preventable death for those under 40. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has warned of an “accident crisis” as data shows a 42% increase in accidental deaths over the last decade, costing the UK almost £12 billion annually in NHS care and lost working days. Almost 29 million working days were lost to accidents in 2022/23, 10 times more than due to strikes, with a combined cost to UK businesses of £5.9 billion.
