The Illinois Tollway is transitioning from plastic transponders to sticker tags, with customers urged to make the switch sooner rather than later, as the deadline has been extended by two years. Sticker tags, using RFID technology, must be linked to a vehicle and can be obtained for free at Customer Service centers, online, or for a fee at select stores, ready for use within 24 hours on E-ZPass roadways. Motorists are reminded not to discard transponders but to recycle them due to containing lithium-ion batteries.
