On Veterans Day, many state and government offices will be closed, but various retailers are offering discounts and freebies for veterans and active service members in the Chicago area, including free meals at Applebee’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Chili’s, as well as discounts at AutoNation and Kohl’s. National Parks will also be free to all visitors on Veterans Day. While Veterans Day honors living veterans and originated from Armistice Day in 1919, Chicago schools will be in session, and banks, mail, and some government offices will be closed. Numerous events will be held in Chicago to commemorate Veterans Day, including a ceremony at Soldier Field.
