A new ‘Muck Map’ of the UK has revealed that areas with high levels of pollution from factory farms are experiencing a halt in housebuilding, with the Severn, Great Ouse, Ouse, Trent, Norfolk Rivers Group, and Wye river catchments most at risk. Intensive farming is blamed for river pollution emergencies, but national planning rules still allow factory farms to be built in already polluted areas. In response, Natural England has advised against granting permission for new homes in areas with nutrient overload, in an effort to prevent further harm to rivers and streams.
