A world-first driving trial in Victoria is investigating the effects of THC, the psychoactive compound in medicinal cannabis, on driving performance. Led by Swinburne University with a $4.9-million state grant, the trial will test steering, braking, and speed control while assessing distraction handling. Participants prescribed cannabis for medical conditions will be accompanied by driving instructors with dual controls, with the study aiming to change legislation around automatic licence bans for medicinal users caught driving with traces of THC in their system.
