Furniture giant IKEA has agreed to pay €6 million towards a government fund compensating victims of forced labor under Germany’s communist dictatorship, after revelations that political prisoners were used to produce furniture for the company. The move follows years of campaigning by victim groups and discussions with the Union of Victims’ Associations of Communist Dictatorship. IKEA’s landmark payment is the first of its kind and is seen as a step towards addressing dark chapters in the company’s history and setting an example for other companies to follow.
