How do Americans feel about Biden and Trump on immigration issues?

Both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are scheduled to visit the southern border on Thursday. The border and high rates of illegal immigration have become a contentious issue between them in the race for the White House. The Biden campaign criticized Trump for his visit, accusing him of playing political games for his own benefit. In response, a Trump campaign spokeswoman stated that Trump is visiting the “crime scene of Biden’s open border” and will outline his plan to secure the border immediately upon taking office.

Recent polling sheds light on how Americans view immigration and the border, as well as which candidate they believe would handle the issue better. According to Gallup, more American adults consider immigration the most important problem facing the country, with Republicans driving this concern. Democrats, on the other hand, are less likely to cite immigration as the top issue. A Quinnipiac University poll revealed that immigration ranked third in importance among registered voters, with Republicans showing more concern than Democrats.

Biden’s approval ratings on immigration are relatively low, with only 18% approving of his handling of immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to ABC News/Ipsos polling. In Gallup’s February poll, 28% of American adults approved of Biden’s immigration policies, while 67% disapproved. On the other hand, Trump has garnered more trust from Americans on immigration issues, according to various polls.

In a poll by Marquette University Law School, 53% of registered voters believed Trump would handle immigration and border security better, while only 25% thought Biden would. Party lines largely dictate approval ratings, with Republicans overwhelmingly supporting Trump and Democrats backing Biden. The issue of immigration and the border continues to be a major point of contention between the two presidential candidates.
