Iranian authorities executed four individuals at the end of October for selling illegal alcohol that resulted in the deaths of 17 people and hospitalization of over 190 others. The highest number of executions after China, Iran banned alcohol production and consumption after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, leading to a black market for illegal alcohol and mass poisonings. Only recognized Christian minorities are permitted to produce and consume alcohol in Iran, with recent reports of around 40 deaths due to tainted alcohol in the country.
