EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has called for an “immediate ceasefire” in Lebanon and criticized Israel’s “unacceptable attacks” on UN peacekeepers in its fight against Hezbollah, pushing the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission to the forefront of the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Borrell also emphasized the need for international support for UNIFIL and immediate reinforcement of the Lebanese army to maintain peace and security in the region, as tensions rise due to Hamas’s aggression against Israel and direct attacks between Israel and Iran. The EU is urging for a ceasefire and respect for relevant UN Security Council resolutions to prevent further escalation and protect civilians in the midst of the conflict.
