Hamas Rejects Cease-Fire Proposal, Dashing Biden’s Hopes of Near Term Deal

Israel has been under significant pressure in negotiations, leading to concessions such as offering to release 15 Palestinians jailed for serious terrorism charges in exchange for five female Israeli soldiers held in Gaza.

This offer was part of a larger proposal to exchange many Palestinian prisoners and detainees for about 35 other hostages during a six-week cease-fire period, according to officials.

Hamas leaders have stated that any deal to release over 100 hostages in Gaza depends on a permanent cease-fire and Israeli troop withdrawal. However, Israel is firm on not compromising its goal of toppling Hamas in Gaza, indicating a reluctance to agree to a long-term truce.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller mentioned significant progress in negotiations between Israel and Hamas, with efforts ongoing to finalize an agreement.

However, the outcome ultimately depends on Hamas’s willingness to agree to a deal that benefits the Palestinian people they claim to represent.

In the absence of an agreement, the Palestine Red Crescent Society halted emergency medical operations for two days in an area of Gaza where Israeli forces intercepted a patient evacuation convoy, detaining workers on suspicion of aiding Hamas fighters.

Despite having coordinated the evacuation details with Israeli authorities, the convoy was stopped after leaving Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, resulting in patients and aid workers being forced out of vehicles and detained for hours.
