Taiwan president says 'won't yield an inch' in defence of island's territory

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te declared that Taiwan will not concede any territory to China, amidst ongoing military pressure from Beijing to accept its sovereignty claim. Lai made the statement during a visit to the Kinmen islands for the 75th anniversary of a victory over communist forces. He emphasized the importance of defending democracy and freedom, stating that external forces will not be allowed to alter the future of the islands. The historical dispute between Beijing and Taipei stems from a civil war in 1949, with China claiming Taiwan as part of its territory. Lai, who has been vocal in defending Taiwanโ€™s sovereignty since taking office in May, reiterated his commitment to protecting the homeland.
