A United Nations report states that the world is on track to warm by 1.8 degrees Celsius, but countries could reduce this by half if they fulfill their climate change promises; however, this won’t be enough to prevent severe heatwaves, wildfires, storms, and droughts. The report warns that without immediate and drastic emission cuts, the goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is unlikely to be achieved, putting the planet at risk of irreversible damage. The top 20 carbon-polluting countries are failing to meet their emission reduction targets, highlighting the urgent need for stronger action to avert climate catastrophe.
