China announced it will conduct live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait near Niushan Island, just 165 kilometers from Taipei, following recent US and Canadian warship transits. The drills, scheduled from 9am to 1pm local time, will be restricted to ships, according to the Maritime Safety Administration. The People’s Liberation Army has stated it will defend national sovereignty and regional peace, denouncing foreign presence in the contentious waterway.
