Rally in Michigan Urges Protest Vote Against Biden’s Israel Policies
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Leading up to the Michigan Democratic primary, speakers at a rally in Dearborn, Mich., called on voters to not support President Biden due to his stance on the war in Gaza. They warned that any protest vote could potentially result in former President Donald J. Trump winning in November, placing the blame on Mr. Biden and Democrats who align with his Israel policies.

Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan, emphasized the threat Trump poses to democracy and criticized President Biden’s support for what she described as the most extreme government in Israel’s history.

Ms. Tlaib is the sole member of Michigan’s congressional delegation endorsing an initiative urging Democrats to vote “uncommitted” in the primary as a form of protest against Mr. Biden’s Gaza policy. This movement, spearheaded by Listen to Michigan, has injected energy into a primary that Mr. Biden is anticipated to win decisively, but it has raised concerns about potential loss of support for the president in the swing state come November.

The extent of support garnered for the “uncommitted” vote remains uncertain, despite Listen to Michigan’s efforts through rallies and outreach to mosques across the state.

The rally on Sunday, organized by the Michigan Task Force for Palestine, attracted over 200 attendees in Dearborn. It aimed to demonstrate that backing for the initiative transcends Michigan’s Arab American community. Speakers included a Black pastor from a Detroit Baptist church, a lawyer affiliated with Jewish Voice for Peace, and leaders from a local United Automobile Workers chapter.

Mayor Abdullah Hammoud of Dearborn, a Democrat supporting the “uncommitted” effort, emphasized that the issue is humanitarian and not limited to Arab or Muslim concerns.

Mr. Biden’s allies, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer, have cautioned against any vote that does not support the president, citing the potential for aiding Trump’s re-election bid. They highlighted Trump’s previous anti-Muslim statements, specifically his calls for a travel ban.

Despite these warnings, some speakers at the rally asserted their determination to hold Mr. Biden accountable for addressing the Mideast conflict, even if it means risking a Trump victory.

Councilwoman Gabriela Santiago-Romero, expressing fatigue over voting out of fear, stressed the need to instill fear in Democrats to prompt action from Mr. Biden.

Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, highlighted the president’s efforts to engage with and address the concerns of Muslim, Arab American, and Palestinian communities.

In addition to opposition from Listen to Michigan, Mr. Biden faces resistance from a campaign called Abandon Biden, whose supporters pledge not to vote for him in November citing the Gaza conflict.

Ms. Tlaib criticized congressional colleagues who have supported military aid to Israel, urging Michigan to take a stand against such actions.

As the rally concluded, attendees pledged their support for Tuesday’s primary, echoing a call to action from Ms. Tlaib.

Dillard University, which led the repatriation efforts, seeks to...

Donald Trump has escalated his conflict with Harvard University, threatening to redirect $3 billion in federal research funding and reviewing existing contracts due to perceived disrespect and a failure to address campus antisemitism.
