Cement-producer Lafarge Canada has launched a new low-carbon fuel facility at its Exshaw plant, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by burning construction waste. The facility will divert 120,000 tonnes of waste annually, reducing CO2 emissions by 30,000 square tonnes and replacing 50% of natural gas used in one kiln. Despite concerns from residents, the $38-million facility, supported by $10 million from Emissions Reduction Alberta, is operational after years of planning.
