It was a challenging journey for Thompson to claim the championship, requiring eight match points to defeat Zverev in a grueling three hours and 40 minutes.
Even in the quarterfinal match against American Alex Michelsen, Thompson found himself trailing 6-0 4-1 before mounting a comeback to win in three sets 0-6 7-6 7-5.
However, the final proved to be a smoother affair for Thompson, as he secured a 6-3 7-6 victory in just over two hours.
Thompson delivered seven aces compared to Ruud’s zero and capitalized on his break point opportunities, converting all three chances, while Ruud could only convert two out of 13.
After turning professional in 2013 and maintaining a position in the world’s top 100 since 2016, Thompson’s title win was a long time in the making.
Following his near exit in the quarterfinals, there was astonishment at Thompson’s ability to go the distance and emerge victorious.
