Jila Mossaed, a poet who fled Iran for Sweden in 1986 at the age of 38 without knowing Swedish, was recently inducted into Sweden’s prestigious Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature. Despite struggling to learn the language for years, Mossaed now writes in both Farsi and Swedish, although she still faces challenges with pronunciation. The Swedish Academy, established in 1786 by King Gustav III, has recognized Mossaed’s unique contribution as the first foreigner to be honored with membership.
