The heated tobacco products excise cut – a trial, but not as we know it

The excise tax on heated tobacco products was recently reduced by 50 percent on July 1, with Associate Health Minister Casey Costello referring to it as a “trial” that will be reviewed after 12 months. However, the Prime Minister clarified that the decision to make the tax cut permanent will depend on its effectiveness, despite the misleading claims made in the Cabinet paper.
