E-waste conundrum: Draft guidelines point to impractical over-regulation | Editorial Comment

Manufacturers of consumer electronics are criticizing the Centre’s draft guidelines on setting minimum prices for recycling and processing electronic waste, citing over-regulation that hinders the industry’s transition to the organized sector. The guidelines have increased the costs for producers to recycle e-waste, with the price of recycling metals now set at Rs 80 a kg. Despite manufacturers’ objections and appeals to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, the rules remain unchanged.
