In response to devastating flooding three years ago, Environment Canterbury has significantly improved Canterbury’s resilience to extreme weather events. Following heavy rainfall in May 2021, a region-wide state of emergency was declared as flooding caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. ECan has completed $22.6 million worth of restoration work on stopbanks, riverbanks, and flood protection vegetation to better prepare for future extreme weather and rainfall.

Child dies at Lower Hutt play park after water incident
A child has tragically died after a water-related incident at Motutawa Avalon Park in Lower Hutt, as reported by the police. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the child was found unresponsive in a body of water and despite CPR efforts, they could not be resuscitated. The police have stated that the death will be referred to the coroner for further investigation. Full Article
