September 22, Lincoln issues preliminary Emancipation Proclamation

On this day in history, President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, declaring all enslaved people in Confederate states should be freed by Jan. 1, 1863 if the fighting did not cease. Additionally, in 1776, Capt. Nathan Hale, 21, was hanged as a spy by the British during the Revolutionary War.
