Woman shot by B.C. police was Colombian refugee with young daughter, advocate says

Advocates have identified Vanessa Renteria, a South American refugee from Buenaventura, Colombia, who died after being shot by police in Surrey, B.C. She was raising a young daughter and had recently arrived in Canada before the incident. Renteria had been approved for permanent residency and had made friends in her new community, according to Angela Marie MacDougall of Battered Women’s Support Services.
