ST. LOUIS — The Islanders’ dressing room on Tuesday night was noticeably lacking in celebration.

Throughout this season, the Islanders have often tried to mask their losses with positivity.

However, after a 5-4 overtime victory against the Penguins, they were unwilling to pretend it was a perfect win.

When Mathew Barzal was asked about his game-winning assist, his first words were, “Oh man, we really gotta figure it out late in games.”

Barzal’s comment was accurate as the Islanders almost repeated their previous overtime loss to the Rangers, squandering a 4-2 lead in regulation against the Penguins.

Although Adam Pelech’s overtime goal secured the win, the Islanders know that such outcomes have been too common this season.

With 55 games played, the Islanders are tied with the Devils, trailing the Red Wings by four points for the second wild-card spot.

To make a playoff push, the players understand they need to raise their performance level.

Barzal emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “We really do have the lead a lot and gotta find a way to get over the hump. It’s nice to get the win tonight, but it shouldn’t have got there. Gotta find a way to be better.”

The Islanders rank fifth in the league for least time spent trailing, highlighting their potential and their tendency to squander opportunities.

Coach Patrick Roy praised the team for their desire to win and emphasized the need to eliminate self-defeating habits.

The Islanders’ upcoming games against playoff contenders will test their resolve and determination to secure a postseason spot.

The team acknowledges the need to address issues like sloppy penalties and defensive lapses when holding a lead.

Barzal took responsibility for his recent penalties and emphasized the importance of turning the page quickly to maintain momentum.

With a sense of urgency growing in the dressing room, the Islanders are focused on translating their determination into positive results.

“It feels good,” Cal Clutterbuck said. “But the reality of it is, we’ve got a long road ahead. We’ll enjoy it tonight and tomorrow we’re all about the next one. Obviously we’re gonna have to string some together.”
