The Liberian ship Akhisar has been detained by the Maritime Authority in the Canary Islands after a 1,800-litre fuel spill during duel transfer operations. The ship is being held on the popular Spanish island of Gran Canaria until its owners pay 340,000 euros (£287,000) in damages, with 200,000 euros (just under £169,000) reserved for administrative fees. The spill occurred on Wednesday night, and the ship will not be allowed to leave until the payment is made.
