A year on, rebuilding Libya’s flood-hit Derna plagued by politics

Reconstruction efforts in eastern Libya following devastating flooding a year ago are empowering military leader Khalifa Haftar, according to experts. In September 2023, Storm Daniel caused two dams to burst in Derna, resulting in massive flooding that killed nearly 4,000 people and left thousands missing. This tragedy has enabled Haftar to strengthen his influence in the country, escalating the existing divisions within Libya.
