Supervolcano discovered beneath England linked to massive eruptions

Scientists have discovered evidence of a vast supervolcano hidden beneath eastern England, believed to have caused one of the largest eruptions in Earth’s history around 454 million years ago, long before the age of dinosaurs. This newly identified volcanic system is located under the Wash on England’s east coast and poses no current threat of eruption. The research, conducted by the British Geological Survey and the University of Oslo, involved re-examining zircon crystals from boreholes in Lincolnshire and Norfolk, which revealed that these crystals were formed simultaneously, indicating they originated from the same massive volcanic event. The study helps explain the source of a significant layer of volcanic ash found across northern and eastern Europe, linking it to the ancient eruption that spread ash over what is now Scandinavia.

Why It Matters

The discovery of this supervolcano provides crucial insights into geological history and volcanic activity in Europe. The eruption that occurred 454 million years ago is estimated to have expelled between 600 to 1,000 cubic kilometers of material into the atmosphere, significantly impacting the environment and climate of that era. Understanding the origins of the Kinnekulle tephra, a widespread layer of volcanic ash found across several countries including Norway and Sweden, helps clarify past geological processes and the movement of volcanic material across ancient bodies of water. This research enhances the understanding of the Wash Igneous Complex, contributing to the broader knowledge of volcanic systems and their effects on the Earth’s geological history.
