SAPS 10111 emergency number outages in Cape Town, backup phones activated

Western Cape police commissioner Sizakhele Dyantyi has announced that the SAPS 10111 emergency number in Cape Town has been non-operational since 16:00 on Tuesday. Technicians from Telkom and the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) are currently working at the Maitland command centre to restore the lines. In the meantime, the public is advised to contact local police stations or community policing forums for assistance. The exact timeline for when the emergency number will be restored remains unclear, with Dyantyi unable to provide a specific estimate. Reports indicate that call operators are relying on backup phones, which have proven to be inefficient, leading to concerns about the emergency response capabilities in the area.

Why It Matters

The disruption of the SAPS 10111 emergency number highlights ongoing issues within South Africa’s emergency response systems. The Maitland call centre, which handles a significant volume of calls, has faced scrutiny for its operational challenges, including high call abandonment rates and staff concerns about working conditions. Historical data shows that during the 2024/25 financial year, over eight million calls were made to the 10111 centre, with more than two million abandoned, reflecting systemic inefficiencies. This incident also follows recent criticism regarding the SAPS’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies, underscoring the urgent need for improvements in infrastructure and management within the police service.
