Élections Québec to send voter information in French only for first time

Élections Québec announced that for the upcoming general election, it will send voter information documents exclusively in French to comply with new language laws implemented in 2022. While these documents will be in French only, they will feature a QR code directing voters to the agency’s English website for additional information. Indigenous voters and those eligible for English instruction can request their materials and services in English directly from Élections Québec. Voters are expected to receive their provincial election guide and notice of entry by the week of September 14, with reminder cards sent out the following week. The election is scheduled for October 5.

Why It Matters

This change reflects the province’s ongoing efforts to protect and promote the French language, following the passage of legislation that mandates French as the exclusive language for public institutions. Quebec’s language laws have evolved over the years, with the most recent reforms intensifying the focus on French language use in various sectors. The decision to limit communication to French only could significantly impact English-speaking citizens and communities, highlighting the balancing act between preserving cultural identity and ensuring accessibility in a bilingual society.
