What You Need to Know
• A group of 20 African civil society organizations has called for an independent investigation into six unidentified bodies found in Guinea.
• The bodies were discovered bound and blindfolded on August 24 in the village of Alassoya, Forecariah prefecture.
• Guinea’s Armed Forces confirmed the discovery and pledged to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances of the deaths.

A coalition of 20 African civil society organizations has urged for an independent investigation into the discovery of six unidentified male bodies in a mass grave in Guinea. The bodies were found on August 24 by local men gathering firewood in the village of Alassoya, located in Lower Guinea’s Forecariah administrative prefecture. Guinea’s Armed Forces have confirmed the discovery and stated that the bodies have been sent to a local hospital for identification and to ascertain the circumstances of their deaths. The organizations, including the Afrikajom Centre and branches of Tournons La Page, expressed concerns that the victims may have faced extrajudicial executions, citing at least 35 documented cases of enforced disappearances in Guinea since September 5, 2021.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights ongoing human rights concerns in Guinea, particularly following the military coup led by General Mamady Doumbouya in 2021. Since the coup, there has been a significant crackdown on dissent, with numerous opposition leaders arrested or forced into exile. The discovery of the mass grave raises alarms about the treatment of political dissenters and the potential for state-sanctioned violence. The call for an independent investigation reflects broader demands for accountability and transparency in the wake of increasing reports of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the country.
