What You Need to Know
• Rebecca Lanning’s 4-year-old son was exposed to rabies after visiting a petting zoo in Mocksville, North Carolina.
• Three baby goats at the petting zoo tested positive for rabies and were euthanized by health officials.
• The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has not estimated the number of people exposed to the infected goats.

Rebecca Lanning, a 30-year-old mother from Marion, North Carolina, received alarming news last Friday that her 4-year-old son had been exposed to rabies during a family outing on August 15. The family had visited a dinosaur exhibit in Mocksville, where her son interacted with baby goats at a petting zoo. Following the exposure, Lanning took her son to the doctor, where he received the first two of six rabies vaccine shots as part of post-exposure prophylaxis. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced that three baby goats tested positive for rabies, leading to their euthanization, while a fourth goat was suspected to have the disease. The health department has not yet provided an estimate of how many people may have been exposed to the infected animals.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the risks associated with petting zoos and the potential for rabies transmission from animals to humans. Rabies is a viral disease that is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear, making timely vaccination critical. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is investigating the exposure and has noted that the infected goats were part of a mobile petting zoo that visited various events across the state. Understanding the spread of rabies and the importance of vaccination can help prevent future incidents and protect public health.
