Resource consent has been granted for the Waiwera Thermal Springs resort, set to be developed north of Auckland, with an anticipated opening in 2028. Brandon Batagol, the joint managing director of the development company, confirmed that the Auckland Council has approved the project, allowing construction to begin in early 2027. This marks a significant milestone in the development process, as detailed plans have reached an advanced design stage. The new resort will replace the popular ex-pool site and feature 28 geothermally heated pools, enhancing the region’s appeal as a leisure destination.

Why It Matters

The Waiwera Thermal Springs site has historical significance, having been a popular destination for decades prior to its closure. The redevelopment aims to revitalize this area, which has seen a decline in tourism and local engagement since the original facilities were shut down. The new resort is expected to contribute to the local economy through job creation and increased visitors, reflecting broader trends in the New Zealand tourism sector which has been recovering post-pandemic. Additionally, this project aligns with the growing interest in eco-friendly and geothermal tourism, leveraging New Zealand’s natural geothermal resources.
