What You Need to Know
• NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope was launched on Sunday from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
• The $4.3 billion telescope will take over three months to reach its operational orbit at Lagrange Point 2.
• The telescope aims to explore dark energy, dark matter, and discover thousands of exoplanets over a five-year mission.

NASA’s newest flagship astronomical observatory, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, was launched on Sunday, marking a significant advancement in astrophysics and cosmology. The $4.3 billion telescope was sent into space aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket operated by SpaceX from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It is destined for Lagrange Point 2, approximately 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) from Earth, where it will join the Webb Space Telescope. The mission is designed to last five years, with the potential for an additional five years if a robotic refueling system becomes available. The Roman Space Telescope is expected to conduct a comprehensive survey of over 2 billion galaxies, providing insights into the universe’s expansion and the nature of dark matter and dark energy, which constitute most of the universe’s mass.

Why It Matters

The launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope represents a major step in understanding the universe, particularly regarding dark matter and dark energy. Historically, these components have been elusive, making up approximately 27% and 68% of the universe, respectively. The telescope’s ability to discover thousands of exoplanets and conduct extensive surveys of galaxies will enhance our knowledge of cosmic phenomena. This mission builds on previous space telescopes, such as the Hubble and Webb, and aims to answer fundamental questions about the universe’s structure and evolution.
